Shooting in the Street

About three weeks ago, we were awakened at about 1:30am to the sounds of gunfire out in the street. Both Angie and I woke up as well as Emma, but both boys slept through it. I knew immediately what it was when I heard it. There were about eight shots in all. It still happens here sometimes that people will shoot their guns off in the air when they get drunk, or when they’re trying to send a message to someone. So, we tried to convince ourselves that that is what happened and tried to go back to sleep.
The next morning, Angie took her bicycle to the corner market to pick up a few vegetables and saw some police tape and a place where someone had died around the corner from our house. People in our neighborhood were pretty shook up by it all. We found out that there was a handful of people who were causing some problems the night before and one of them got shot. It sounds like a pretty isolated incident that came into our neighborhood from somewhere else. We haven’t had any more disturbances since, but we have certainly been praying for peace in our little community.
Through it all, we have met a few Christians who live in our neighborhood. One of the moto-taxi drivers that we talked to told us that he used to study at New Life a while back and that he is a Christian. He also asked us if we were Christians because he said that he could see that we weren’t scared. Another man told us some more details and he told us that he is also a Christian. Overall, there hasn’t been any other sort of crime or violence in our neighbourhood since. For the first couple of nights afterwards, it was on our mind, but lately, it seems to have passed.
Please continue to pray that our community would experience the peace and the blessings of God. There seems to be more of an openness with our neighbours now, so pray that we use it for the glory of God. Also, please pray for this man’s family. I don't know who this man was, but his family is now missing a part of their family. Please pray that they would have the opportunity to hear the Good News of Jesus through this event.
Thank you all for joining us in praying. We appreciate you all so very much!

MFI Cambodia

About two weeks ago, we found out that there was going to be an MFI conference in Singapore. Unfortunately, we found out about it just under a week before it was supposed to start. However, because Jetstar Airlines has cheap flights and because of the generous hospitality of some of our Singaporean friends, I was able to go at the last minute. I also don’t want to overlook the most important reason that I was able to go, and that was because Angie graciously agreed to hold the fort while I was gone. She is a champion!

MFI stands for Minister’s Fellowship International and it is an association of church leaders from around the world. It was started at City Bible Church in Portland, Oregon and it is one of the avenues that led to us being in Cambodia since our church in Hamilton is also a part of MFI. Angie and I have been members of MFI since 2006 and have really been blessed by the relationships that we have through MFI.

Pastor Frank Damazio was the main speaker at the conference, and he was joined by Pastors Mike Servello, Bob McGregor and Jerry David. It was an awesome time of casting the vision of MFI for many new leaders in Singapore, and I really received a lot through it. Some of the things that we talked about and studied, I am going to use and teach to our leaders here in Cambodia. In fact, one of the lessons, I am going to use next week in our School of Leaders. Some of the other messages are still going through my mind and have been a blessing to me personally. The whole trip was a great spiritual refreshing.

While in Singapore, I was able to stay with some friends not very far from the church where the conference was hosted. Joshua and Angie Sundram were a huge blessing and took care of me very well. Of course, while there, I had stop at some of my favorite places, McDonald’s, (I know, I know, I’ll probably get mail about McDonald’s being one of my favorites, but after working there for eight years and now not having access to it in Cambodia, you do get the occasional craving for a Quarter Pounder!) The Coffee Bean, IKEA and our kids also made sure that I stopped at Toys R Us to pick up some surprises. J

It was also great to meet lots of new people through the conference. I met people from Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore of course, and other places. It’s amazing how MFI brings people together and we’re looking forward to see what the future holds for MFI in our region.

Now, it’s so great to be home again. Thanks to modern technology, I was able to call almost every day from Singapore and say hello to the family, but nothing beats being together again. Also, the month of July promises to be an exciting one in our church. There are many special events on the calendar and lots of guest ministry. It looks to be a very pivotal time for our church. But this letter is already too long, so I’ll have to save some of those details for another e-mail.

Blessings!
